11:00 am-12:00 pmHAIG Lecture: David Weddle - "A Critique of Religious Sacrifice" Thomas Commons
Former Cornell professor and now Colorado College Professor Emeritus of Religion David Weddle will speak on "Christianity Without The Cross: A Critique of Religious Sacrifice." What would religion be without sacrifice? Religions that honor Abraham still regard offering his son to God with deep ambivalence and interpret his act in ways that soften its moral offense. But Christianity understands Abraham’s near sacrifice as foreshadowing the crucifixion of Christ and Christian tradition early settled on sacrifice as the meaning of the cross. Was that decision necessary and could Christianity give up its theology of redemptive violence? We will consider alternative readings of the cross, from Peter Abelard to Martin Luther King Jr. Signed books will be available at the Cornell Bookstore. Weddle is the author of three books, most recently “Sacrifice in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam” (NYU Press, 2017). Co-sponsored by HAIG and Spiritual Life Office.
11:00 am-1:00 pm1,000 Cranes Orange Carpet
Join Colleges Against Cancer on the OC over lunch to fold paper cranes! Our goal honors the story of a young girl with cancer who tried to fold 1,000 paper cranes while she was in the hospital. When she was too weak to complete that goal, her family and classmates helped her. We undertake this challenge to show our support for individuals battling cancer, and to raise money for brain cancer research. Email civic@cornellcollege.edu with questions.
6:00 pm-8:00 pmLEADS Leadership and Entrepreneurship Panel Discussion and Reception Hall-Perrine Room of Thomas Commons
LEADS is hosting a Leadership and Entrepreneurship Panel Discussion and Reception and invites leaders from across campus. The event will feature a panel discussion from 6-7 p.m. and then a catered networking reception following, so an RSVP is requested to dpitts@cornellcollege.edu. Julie Zielinski is our moderator. She is Cornell's Intro to Entrepreneurship instructor and VP of Marketing and Strategy at the Entrepreneurial Development Center in Cedar Rapids. She will lead a discussion with Steve Shriver, CEO at Eco Lips, Pat Airy, President and CEO at Goodwill of The Heartland, Brooke Fitzgerald, owner of the Early Bird Cafe, and Andre' Wright, founder of the fashion label Born Leaders United. This is an excellent opportunity for students to learn about entrepreneurial leadership and practice networking skills.
