11:10 am-12:00 pmSIG block 6 -- Trade-offs in hemiparastic plants -- Dr. Jennifer Nelson, Department of Mathematics West Science
Hemiparasitic plants, like mistletoe, are plants that both photosynthesize and gain nutrients through parasitism of other nearby plants. The degree to which a hemiparasite acts as a parasite can vary between species and individuals, indicating possible trade-offs between the plant's ability to parasitize and photosynthesize. Population dynamics in these plants will vary based on the degree to which an individual is parasitic, as well as the degree of competition it suffers from nearby plants.
