Phi Beta Kappa Visiting Scholar Lisa Pratt

Technical and Ethical Challenges Associated with the Search for Extraterrestrial Life

Event Detail
Date: Friday, April 23rd
Time: 11:00 am-12:00 pm
Description:

Pratt is Professor of Geological Sciences at Indiana University, director of the NASA Astrobiology Institute Team, and member of the NASA science advisory group to examine Mars. She will talk on reports of methane in the atmosphere of Mars -- tantalizing hints about geological processes that could sustain life on the red planet. There are profound implications for the exploration of Mars because methane could provide a source of energy for indigenous life forms or migrated terrestrial organisms. Planetary protection carries a dual responsibility for preventing contamination of Mars by terrestrial microorganisms and ensuring containment of extra-terrestrial life forms if Martian samples are returned to Earth. Improved decontamination and sterilization of spacecraft will help preserve natural conditions at Martian sites with the highest potential for habitability.
