SUMMARY:Beta Omicron Distinguished Alumni Visitor Public Lecture
DESCRIPTION:Pulitzer Prize-winner John Sullivan '93 will present "Public S
ervice Journalism in a Declining Media Landscape: A new model for produci
ng investigative reporting." Sullivan will talk about the enormous invest
ment newspapers make to produce stories such as "Assault on Learning," th
e Philadelphia Inquirer series that won the Pulitzer Prize this year in t
he public service category, and how institutions such as Medill at Northw
estern are exploring new models to hold government officials accountable.
The lecture will include a discussion of what's involved in reporting, a
nd writing the most ambitious stories, especially at a time when newspape
rs are increasingly succumbing to a failing financial model.
