11:10 am-12:00 pmUniversity of Iowa Talk: On the Four Color Theorem Law Hall
University of Iowa Graduate Student Roman Aranda will present "On the Four Color Theorem." The four color theorem states that every map in the globe can be colored using at most four colors so that any two neighboring countries have distinct coloration; it became famous when it was the first math result with a computer-assisted proof. We will talk about the story of this renowned problem and its controversial proof. We will also discuss “self contained” and “mathematically interesting” proofs of other versions of this result, some of which involve properties of knots and line integrals in complex analysis. The talk is directed toward undergraduate students interested in having fun with math. No background besides calculus will be assumed to be known.
