| 3:30 pm Feb 10th | "Hoodwinked and Bamboozled" presented by Bryant K. Smith The CommonsThis program is designed to be an interactive examination of minority student image as portrayed on college campuses today. From the stereotypical "dumb jock" to the often glamorized "ghetto queen," this program examines stereotypes of people, culture, and the environments they come from. A critical discussion of how college students are systematically taught to disconnect the stereotypical images they promote from the real beings and communities they describe. The program will provide historical and theoretical basis for examining images as presented in promotional material, Web sites, other audio-visual formats and will also include discussion about the role of image in social activities such as theme parties and homecoming. This session will conclude by discussing the ramifications both legally and philosophically, image control and/or lack thereof has on institutions of higher learning and their attempts at creating diverse, safe, and critical learning environments. There will be several activities which will offer audience members a chance to participate during the program. |
