|11:00 am-1:00 pm||Alternative Gift Market: Third World Crafts, Turkish Coffee, & Cards with a Cause Thomas Commons|
Give a gift that makes a difference. All proceeds of sales of SERRV artisan items goes back to the communities that made them. Or, consider making a gift in the name of a beloved professor or family member that will enrich the lives and education of Native American middle school students in Laguna, N.M., or assist people in earthquake-torn Van, Turkey. A Turkish coffee fundraiser is also available. Sponsored by the chaplain and Spiritual Life Office's Student Leadership teams (Soul Friends and Inter-faith Exploration and Understanding).
|11:10 am||SIG Lecture West Science|
Leon Tabak, professor of computer science, will discuss "Literate Programming." Computer scientists write for two audiences. They write for machines and so must write instructions in a form that a machine can interpret. And they also write for human beings and must describe the solutions of problems in ways that the people who adapt, extend or correct errors in a solution can understand. Not surprisingly, computer scientists encounter challenges that intersect the obstacles that writers in other fields face. Taking lessons from other writers, and learning from experience, computer scientists have developed methods and
tools that anyone might use to share complex ideas. This
talk will identify the challenges of meeting the needs of the human
audience and ways of meeting those challenges.
|11:30 am-12:00 pm||Beginning Illustrator Workshop Cole Library|
Interested in graphic design? Adobe Illustrator is considered the industry standard for illustration. The Academic Technology Studio will get you started with some basic graphic creation techniques and tools. If you've already graduated to the more advanced level, come with questions and you can work through them with the Tech Studio.
