|9:00 am-12:00 pm||Chautauqua - Term 2 Thomas Commons|
Presented by Richard Peters, professor emeritus of education. Even though it seems exciting to study famous battles and their outcomes, it is even more important to study the issues surrounding troop movements and strength, the assignment of officers, the attempts at peace, and the making of treaties. Who were the lobbyists? What was the role of newspapers, authors, interpreters, state legislators, and activists? What was the role of statehood movements? This course will specifically look at the diplomacy surrounding Red Cloud and Spotted Tail--two great and competing Lakota warriors, leaders, and politicians. Continues Oct. 22. Cost of the four-week program is $36. For more information call 895-4119.
|11:00 am-6:45 pm||Poverty Questions and Answers Thomas Commons|
Join STEP and the Civic Engagement Office on the OC as we question what poverty is, where it comes from, and what can be done about it. Stop by to learn more and contribute to this campus conversation about poverty issues here and abroad.
|12:00 pm-12:50 pm||Potent Medicine: The Collaborative Cure for Healthcare Thomas Commons|
John Toussaint ’78 is returning to the Hilltop to discuss his newly released book, "Potent Medicine: The Collaborative Cure for Healthcare." He completed his M.D. training at the University of Iowa and after practicing family medicine for 20 years, became the CEO of Thedacare, a large healthcare system in Wisconsin. At Thedacare, he used Toyota Production System principles to reduce patient errors, improve outcomes, and redesign care delivery around patient needs. Toussaint is internationally sought after as a consultant for implementation of “lean” healthcare initiatives. Toussaint’s co-presenter, Michael Baca ’13 interned at the Thedacare Center for Healthcare Value this past summer.
Baca will describe his internship experience as an initial step in recruiting two additional Cornell interns for the summer of 2013.
