|11:10 am||Science Interest Group (SIG) Lecture West Science|
Kara Beauchamp, professor of physics, will give a lecture titled "Detecting Dark Matter." Astronomer Fritz Zwicky first postulated the existence of dark matter in the 1930s, and evidence for its existence has been piling up ever since. Everything that we can see in the universe—stars, planets, glowing gas—is made of normal matter. Dark matter does not give off (or absorb) electromagnetic radiation, so we can't "see" it. Instead, astronomers detect dark matter by its gravitational interaction with constituents of the universe that give off light. This talk will describe evidence for the existence of dark matter, and speculations about what dark matter is.
