HAIG Lecture: Educational Criticism and Connoisseurship: Lenses for Evaluating Educational Practice

Event Detail
Date: Thursday, January 23rd
Time: 11:10 am-12:00 pm
Description:

This lecture critiques current trends that view education as a commodity and proposes an alternative framework for evaluating educational practices. Too often, teaching and learning is reduced to technical and formulaic procedures that are devoid of the aesthetic and humanistic qualities that make up truly meaningful experiences with knowledge. Drawing from John Dewey's Art as Experience and Elliot Eisner's The Enlightened Eye, Kate Kauper will present research on teaching and learning as artistry and will discuss ways in which criticism and connoisseurship can be used to improve curriculum development and the quality of the educational process.
