Nov. 9, 2014 marks the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, which came suddenly to residents of East Germany who had been protesting human rights violations, environmental pollution, and governmental intransigence in the late 1980s. Called "The Peaceful Revolution," the opening of the Berlin Wall and the subsequent fall of the Iron Curtain began with peaceful demonstration marches and religious activism from Protestant churches in Leipzig. In conjunction with the Block 1 German course "Life Under Dictatorship," students will lead visitors on a walking exhibit through various stations on life in the former East Germany. We will end our walk at Allee Chapel with a reenactment of some of the famous events at the Church of St. Nicholas in Leipzig. We invite all members of the Cornell and Mount Vernon community to participate in this event as we celebrate the power of citizens to change the world around them, even in the face of economic hardship and dictatorial oppression.
Exhibit walks will begin at the Thomas Commons at 7 p.m., Monday, Sept. 22 and end in Allee Chapel.
