|7:30 pm Nov 9th||Symphony Orchestra and Choral Concert: "The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace" King Chapel|
This concert, titled "The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace," will commemorate Veterans Day and the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I. The major work will be a suite excerpted from Welsh composer Karl Jenkins' large-scale work for orchestra and chorus "The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace." This work has been performed internationally during 2018 in remembrance of the tragic losses of the first World War. The piece was commissioned for the new millennium and its first recording was released, most poignantly, on September 10, 2001. It is themed on the French medieval song “L'homme armé” and includes movements from the traditional Mass form, the Muslim call to prayer, a Hindu epic poem, Psalms, and secular poetry by Kipling, Dryden, and Tennyson. Other repertoire on the program includes John Rutter's "Distant Land" and Paul Aitken's "In Flanders Field." Featured groups will be the Cornell Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Dr. Martin Hearne, and the Concert Choir, under the direction of Dr. Lisa Hearne. Admission is free and open to the public.
